Turbo Timer
Its a device fitted to most turbo charged cars to allow the engine to run on for a selected amount of time after a hard run, or the turbo being under constant use at high speed (i.e. track days or 1/4 mile drag strip action).
A turbo needs time to cool down after heavy use, and its main cooling aid on the RB25DET is oil and water cooled.
Once the ignition has been switched off, more heat rises as the vehicle is at standstill, and no cold air is fed into it (apart from that of the constant running viscous fan - which would be warm air from the engine bay).
However its not only the cooling down of the turbo that is important - its not a good idea to subject it to too much boost when starting from cold, as the parts wont of had time to heat up for their best operation - although a solution is to keep the car under 3K R.P.M. until the water temperature guide reaches half way, only then is it safe to run the turbo at full boost.
Which Turbo Timer is best for the R33 / RB25DET?
The Timer I have is a EuiJ Auto Turbo Timer from Japan, it can automatically work out the turbo usage to what length of time it needs to run for, or you can use it as a "manual" turbo timer where you put in the lenght of time you want. Mine is set for self calculating, as I dont always use the turbo to its best. This unit cost me £30.00 and gets the thumbs up from me.
The wiring harness may also need to be purchased, and costs around £20.00
Blitz offer a variety of turbo timers, some of which incorporate boost controller, timers and all sorts of fancy gadgets, but of course the price is higher, and the same applies to HKS turbo timers. |
