Driftworks Wasted Spark Coil System
Pending Revisions to be updated. <Posted on 21/05/08
Tools needed: Wire cutters, spade connectors, wire crimpers, soldering iron, solder, Stanley knife, possibly a drill. 8mm, 10mm sockets & ratchet.
The battery should be disconnected and brake pedal pressed to eliminate existing charge in the electrical system.
To access the coils, you need to remove the pipe leading into intake manifold off & disconnect the vacuum & breather hoses.
Remove the amplifier retaining bolts then undo the allan key bolts that hold the coil cover down. Lift the cover and put it aside with the bolts.
Carefully unclip each coil plug electrical socket, and disconnect the amplifier to coil plug, remove the loom entirely in one piece.
Important: Look at the wires on each coil socket, there should be one black, one white, and perhaps a pink wire with a white line. Each one will be different per cylinder. Make a note of these and make sure you leave sufficient amount of play on the wires at the main plug, in case you want to revert to the standard setup again.
Hold the Driftworks coil pack unit in the place and measure up how much wire your going to need for the 6 pins underneath.
3 of these are positives, which are bridged / soldered into one. There is a two pin plug for the amplifier pack, with a white and black wire, the white is cut and now acts as the Positive for the coil pack.
The black wire gets to connected to the earth where the existing coil loom was earthed through.
Important: Using the reference of wire colors and cylinder number, connect 1&6, 2&5 and 3&4.
I have used one side for 1&6, the center for 2&5 and the last for 3&4.
Now connect the H.T. leads to the respective coil sides, and then to the appropriate cylinders.
Make sure everything is connected up, and covered (in the case of cables possibly earthing out on the vehicle) or taped up.
Reconnect the battery, turn ignition on, start engine, job done.
The following video shows the coils firing the spark through the ht lead, indicating that all 6 cylinders are firing.
